Kael sat on his stone, the familiar chill of its surface seeping through his worn trousers. But today, the stone offered no comfort. It was a monument to his former self, the one who could sit and watch the world burn with a detached curiosity. Silas’s words, sharp and clear as shards of glass, echoed in the cavern of his mind. The smoke. Not a natural consequence of war, but a deliberate veil. A lie.

He squeezed his eyes shut, as if to banish the truth that now clung to him like the city’s perpetual grime. The air, thick and acrid, no longer felt like an unavoidable backdrop to life. It felt like a suffocating shroud, woven by unseen hands with malicious intent. He had accepted it for so long, a passive observer of his own slow suffocation. He’d listened to Master Valerius’s pronouncements of progress, of the ebb and flow of the conflict, of the inevitable return to normalcy. He’d even found a strange sort of peace in that acceptance, a surrender to the inevitable. But Silas had ripped away that fragile peace, leaving him exposed and raw.

A cough, dry and rasping, broke through his internal turmoil. He opened his eyes. A woman, her face etched with fatigue and the grime of the streets, was struggling to carry a bundle of rags that seemed too heavy for her frail arms. She stumbled, and the rags spilled onto the dusty ground. For a moment, she just stood there, defeated. Then, with a sigh that seemed to carry the weight of all the city’s weariness, she bent to gather them.
