The air in Silas’s cramped dwelling tasted of dust and forgotten ink. It was a stark contrast to the acrid bite of the city’s perpetual haze, a smell Kael had come to associate with his own suffocating inertia. Here, though, the stillness was a different kind – a quietude born not of resignation, but of deep, held knowledge. Silas, hunched over a table laden with brittle scrolls and strange, metallic contraptions, gestured with a gnarled finger towards a faded map.

“They tell you it was an invasion, a swift, decisive blow that shattered our peace,” Silas’s voice was a dry rustle, like leaves skittering across cobblestones. “A lie, Kael. A convenient narrative spun to justify their insatiable hunger.”

Kael leaned closer, his gaze fixed on the smudged lines that represented borders he’d only ever seen from a distance, or perhaps not at all. The smoke outside obscured even the highest towers, rendering the city a featureless expanse. He’d spent weeks, months, perhaps years, simply observing, a silent spectator to the slow decay of his world. Elara’s act of kindness, the sharing of a meager loaf of bread with a weeping child, had been a spark, igniting a slow burn of discontent within him. It had led him, circuitously, through hushed conversations in darkened alleys and furtive exchanges of whispers, to this hidden room, to this man who spoke of truths the ‘experts’ kept buried.
