The air in the narrow passage was thick with the scent of decay and something else, something metallic and sharp that Kael couldn't quite place. It clung to the rough-hewn stone walls, seeping into his clothes, into his very pores. He’d followed the cryptic directions given by the woman in the market, a series of turns and landmarks that felt more like a treasure hunt for the lost than a path to information. Each corner rounded, each shadow skirted, heightened the gnawing unease in his gut. This was a place that existed outside the city’s official narrative, a place the ‘experts’ would never acknowledge.

He found the door, a slab of warped wood barely visible in the gloom, marked by a faded symbol that looked like a coiled serpent. Hesitantly, Kael pushed it open. It groaned in protest, a sound that echoed unnervingly in the sudden silence. The interior was a cavern of shadows, pierced by thin shafts of light that slanted through unseen cracks in the ceiling. Dust motes danced like tiny, frantic spirits in these beams, illuminating stacks upon stacks of scrolls, brittle books, and what looked like ancient maps. The metallic scent was stronger here, mingled with the dry perfume of aged paper.

A voice, dry and raspy as rustling parchment, broke the silence. "You are late."
