Grandma S finally revealed the truth. The siren lineage ran deep in their family, a sacred duty passed down through generations, a power to maintain balance.
The air in the small cottage, usually thick with the comforting scent of drying herbs and Grandma S’s baking, felt heavy, suffocating. It pressed down on me, a physical manifestation of the grief that had been my constant companion since Grandad E had slipped away. The silence, once a balm, now screamed with his absence. I sat on the worn floral sofa, the same one where he’d hummed me to sleep countless nights, and traced the faded patterns with a trembling finger. The world outside, awash in the crisp autumn sunlight, felt like a cruel joke.
Grandma S sat opposite me, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, her gaze steady and unnervingly calm. It was a calm that had always been a source of strength for me, but now, it felt like a dam holding back a tidal wave. I knew, with a certainty that chilled me to the bone, that the conversation we were about to have would crack that dam.
“Anastasia, my darling,” she began, her voice soft but with an underlying firmness, “there are things you need to understand. Things that have been kept from you, not out of malice, but out of love and a desire to protect you.”
