The air in Juba, once thick with the promise of a new dawn, had curdled into something heavy and suffocating. Anya felt it pressing down on her, a tangible weight born of fear and the chilling realization that her pursuit of truth had pushed her too close to the edge. The rustle of leaves outside her window, so innocent hours ago, now sounded like the furtive footsteps of pursuers. Samuel’s quiet urgency, the way his eyes had darted towards the door when he’d spoken of General Al-Faruq’s men, still echoed in her mind.

“We cannot stay here, Anya,” Samuel had said, his voice barely a murmur, yet it held the force of a pronouncement. “They know you are here. They know what you are looking for.”

Now, as the first hint of predawn light bled into the bruised sky, they were already in motion. The city, usually a cacophony of early risers and sputtering engines, was eerily silent. Anya clutched her worn backpack, the weight of her laptop and notebooks a familiar comfort, yet also a terrifying liability. Every jolt of the battered Land Cruiser as Samuel expertly navigated the unpaved roads sent a fresh wave of anxiety through her. She glanced at Samuel, his face a mask of quiet concentration, his hands sure on the steering wheel. He was their anchor, their compass in this rapidly darkening landscape.
