The air in the small, rented compound hung thick with the scent of dust and the unspoken weight of suspicion. Anya traced the rim of her chipped enamel mug, the lukewarm water within doing little to quench the thirst that had settled deep in her throat. Outside, the relentless sun beat down on the parched earth, a constant reminder of the unforgiving landscape they navigated. Yesterday’s discovery, the hushed conversation in the darkened marketplace, the frantic scribbled notes passed from a trembling hand – it all felt like a dream now, a fevered hallucination born of exhaustion and too much strong, sweet tea. But the gnawing unease in her gut was no illusion.

Samuel had been distant since their return. His usual easy smile, the one that crinkled the corners of his eyes and offered a flicker of shared understanding, was absent. His gaze, when it met hers, was guarded, a landscape Anya no longer recognized. He moved through the compound with a quiet efficiency, his movements precise, his words clipped and devoid of their customary warmth. It was as if a veil had descended, separating them, and Anya, despite her innate desire to understand, found herself adrift in a sea of unspoken questions.

She remembered the moment the shift had occurred. It was just after they had left the market, the shadows lengthening, the usual cacophony of Juba’s evening sounds beginning to swell. They had been walking, their footsteps crunching on the gravel path, when a figure had emerged from the dimming light. A man, his face obscured by the brim of a faded cap, had approached Samuel. Anya had seen the flicker of recognition, the almost imperceptible stiffening of Samuel’s shoulders, before the man had murmured something in a language Anya didn’t understand, a low, urgent cadence that had set her teeth on edge. Samuel had responded with a single, curt nod, and then the man had melted back into the encroaching darkness as quickly as he had appeared.
