Chapter 15
The Fisherman's Rescue
Acting on Croft's confession, the police find Captain Finnigan, who was being held captive by the smugglers. He's shaken but alive, having witnessed a key smuggling exchange.
The air in the interrogation room hung thick and heavy, a stark contrast to the salty breeze that usually caressed August’s face. Silas Croft, his usual slick composure frayed at the edges, sat hunched over the metal table, his confession a bitter, lingering taste in the room. He’d finally cracked, the weight of his illicit dealings and the fear of exposure crushing him. The confession, wrung out of him after hours of relentless questioning, had been a revelation, a tangled web of smuggling routes and backroom deals that stretched far beyond the cheerful façade of their seaside town. But the most crucial piece of information, the one that made August’s heart pound with a mixture of dread and desperate hope, was the location of Captain Finnigan.
“He’s… he’s alive?” Bree whispered, her voice barely audible, her hand gripping August’s arm so tightly her knuckles had turned white. August could only nod, her own throat tight with unshed tears. Alive. After weeks of fearing the worst, the gruff, kind fisherman was alive.
The police, galvanized by Croft’s detailed confession, had moved with swift efficiency. A convoy of cruisers, their sirens silenced to avoid spooking the smugglers, had sped toward a derelict boathouse hidden deep within the marshlands, a place August had only ever seen from a distance, a dark smudge against the horizon. Now, that forgotten structure was the focus of their entire town’s attention.
