Cornered and covered in ice cream, Croft confesses his involvement in the smuggling ring and admits to poisoning the tourist to cover his tracks.

The air in "August's Awesome Scoops" hung thick with the cloying sweetness of melting sugar and the acrid tang of fear. August, her apron a Jackson Pollock of strawberry swirl and chocolate chip, pressed herself against the cold stainless steel of the ice cream counter, her heart thumping a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Bree, her usually vibrant face pale beneath a smear of vanilla, stood beside her, her hands balled into tight fists. Across from them, silhouetted against the dim glow of the ice cream tubs, was Silas Croft, his usual oily charm replaced by a snarling desperation. The overturned tubs of Rocky Road and Mint Chip lay scattered around them like casualties of a sugary war, their contents oozing onto the floor.

"It's over, Silas," Bree said, her voice trembling but firm. "You're caught."

Croft let out a harsh, humorless laugh. "Caught? You think this is *caught*? You two are just two little girls playing detective. This is just a… a minor inconvenience." He gestured vaguely with a hand that still clutched a half-eaten waffle cone.
