Flavorful Fiasco
During the confrontation, August uses her experimental ice cream ingredients to create a diversion. A sticky, slippery mess makes it hard for the smugglers to move.
The aroma of waffle cones and the salty kiss of the ocean usually filled August’s senses, a comforting symphony of summer. But tonight, the air in “The Scoop” was thick with something else, something acrid and menacing that prickled her skin and made her heart thump a frantic rhythm against her ribs. The confrontation they’d been dreading, the one that had been building like a storm on the horizon, had finally broken.
Silas Croft stood just inside the doorway, his usual slick smile replaced by a sneer that twisted his handsome features into something ugly. Behind him, two hulking figures, men August had only glimpsed lurking in the shadows of the boardwalk at odd hours, filled the entrance, their presence blocking the escape route. The flickering neon of the ice cream sign cast long, dancing shadows that made their menacing stances seem even more pronounced.
Bree, ever the first to react, had instinctively grabbed a heavy metal scoop, her knuckles white. Her eyes, usually sparkling with mischief, were wide with a mixture of fear and defiance. “You won’t get away with this, Croft,” she spat, her voice trembling only slightly.
