A Taste of Danger

The smugglers realize August and Bree are onto them. They decide to silence the girls, planning a confrontation at 'August's Awesome Scoops' during the busy evening rush.

The air hung thick and heavy, not with the usual sweet perfume of waffle cones and melting chocolate, but with a prickling tension that seemed to seep from the very planks of the boardwalk. August wiped down the counter, the rhythmic swish of her cloth a desperate attempt to impose order on the rising tide of unease. It had started with a whisper, a shadow, a missing fisherman, and now, the sickening undertow of something far more sinister was pulling at the edges of her familiar summer world.

Bree, usually a whirlwind of cheerful chaos behind the counter, was unusually subdued. Her eyes, normally bright with mischief, darted towards the entrance with a nervous flicker. She was meticulously arranging the rows of candy toppings, her movements precise, almost robotic. “You think he knows?” she murmured, her voice barely audible above the din of the evening crowd.

August’s heart gave a jolt. “Knows what? Silas Croft? He’s always lurking around, Bree. It’s his M.O.” But even as she said it, a cold dread coiled in her stomach. Silas Croft, with his slicked-back hair and teeth that flashed a little too often, was more than just a rival. He was a question mark, a dark stain on the otherwise sun-drenched canvas of their boardwalk.
