Midnight Deliveries

Following a hunch, the girls stake out Croft's shop late one night. They witness suspicious crates being loaded onto a boat under the cover of darkness.

The salt-laced wind, usually a welcome caress on these warm summer nights, felt sharp and biting tonight, a stark contrast to the sticky sweetness of melted ice cream that clung to August’s clothes. She huddled deeper into her worn denim jacket, the collar pulled high against the chill that had nothing to do with the temperature. Beside her, Bree, ever the impatient one, bounced on the balls of her feet, her usual vibrant energy subdued by the cloak of secrecy that now enveloped them. They were a pair of shadows, perched precariously behind a stack of discarded fishing nets near the far end of the boardwalk, their eyes fixed on the darkened facade of Silas Croft’s souvenir shop.

“Are you sure about this, Gus?” Bree whispered, her voice barely a breath against the rhythmic sigh of the waves. “It’s almost midnight. My mom’s going to freak if I’m not home.”

August squeezed her friend’s arm, a silent reassurance. “We have to, Bree. Captain Finnigan wouldn’t just disappear. And Mr. Croft… he’s been too nice lately. It’s like he’s trying to overcompensate.” Her gaze drifted back to the shop, its windows opaque and uninviting in the moonlight. “Remember what Mrs. Gable said? About seeing strange lights and hearing muffled noises from his back storeroom late at night?”
