My lungs burned, but not just from exertion. A different kind of ache had settled in my chest, a hollow space that Liam’s sudden disappearance had carved out. He was gone, vanished like a puff of smoke, leaving behind only the bitter taste of my own gullibility. Every word, every stolen glance, every whispered promise now replayed in my mind like a broken record, each note a fresh stab of humiliation. My trust issues, those ever-present shadows, had been right all along. I had let my guard down, I had believed, and the universe, it seemed, had a cruel sense of humor.
My gaze snagged on Noah, a beacon of steady calm amidst the chaos. He was a few yards ahead, his brow furrowed in concentration as he navigated a tricky obstacle. He hadn't said much since Liam had bolted, just a quiet, “Are you okay, Ash?” that had held more weight than a thousand reassurances. And I hadn't been okay. I’d mumbled some excuse about needing a moment, about feeling sick, and had retreated into myself, the familiar walls of my insecurity rising higher than ever.
The task ahead was a climbing wall, a daunting structure of brightly colored holds that seemed to mock my current state of disarray. My hands, slick with sweat, fumbled with the carabiner.
