Chapter 15
A Secret Meeting
Jake receives a cryptic message, a summons from the Goddess of Death. He must decide whether to defy the gods' rules and meet her in secret.
Jake found himself adrift in a sea of hushed anxieties. The grand pronouncements of the gods had settled, leaving behind a residue of unease that clung to the air like a shroud. Four hundred and fifty-six chosen, lost to the alleged capriciousness of the Goddess of Death. The number echoed in the minds of the newly awakened, a chilling counterpoint to the promise of divine power. He’d seen the fear flicker in the eyes of others, the wary glances cast towards the shadowed corners of their temporary sanctuary, as if expecting the very embodiment of demise to materialize from the gloom.
But Jake felt a different pull, a morbid curiosity that gnawed at the edges of his apprehension. He remembered the woman on the throne of bone, her beauty a stark contrast to the macabre seat. The chill that had seeped into his very marrow, the palpable aura of finality that had emanated from her, was now a persistent hum beneath his skin. And her question, "Do you want to play with me?" had resonated with an unexpected eagerness within him. His immediate "yes" had surprised even himself, a reckless leap into the unknown that felt, strangely, like coming home.
The first few days of their enforced idyll were a blur of cautious observation and whispered speculation. The gods, a formidable pantheon of eighty-six, moved among them with an air of detached benevolence, their presence both awe-inspiring and deeply unsettling. Zeus, or the god who bore his likeness, with a beard like spun moonlight and eyes that held the storm, had been the one to deliver the initial decree. A month of training, he’d boomed, his voice echoing in the vast, ethereal chamber, a month to understand the gifts they had been bestowed. Safety, he’d assured them, was paramount. Yet, Jake couldn’t shake the feeling that safety was a fragile veneer, a temporary reprieve from a storm that was gathering force.
