The hushed whispers that had slithered through the training grounds like unseen serpents had, by the dawn of the third day, begun to coalesce into something more substantial. They were no longer mere murmurs of doubt, but a growing chorus of accusation, a cacophony of fear directed squarely at the Goddess of Death. Jake, still reeling from his unsettlingly intimate encounter on the throne of bone, found himself increasingly attuned to these pronouncements. It was as if the very air vibrated with their venom.
He’d tried to dismiss them at first, attributing his unease to the sheer overwhelming nature of his new reality. One moment he was a nobody, the next he was a “Child of God,” imbued with abilities he was only beginning to grasp, and surrounded by the very beings who once merely existed in myth. But the whispers persisted, growing louder, more insistent.
“Did you hear about the latest?” a burly man named Marcus, whose newly acquired power seemed to manifest as an unnerving control over earth, cornered Jake near the communal mess hall. His voice was low, conspiratorial, yet laced with an unmistakable edge of triumph. “Another one. Number 457. Gone. Just like that. The Goddess of Death’s touch, they say. Consumed by her own power, just like all the others.”
