The air in the grand library of Moon Estate was thick with the scent of aged paper and beeswax, a familiar perfume that usually soothed Alexander’s restless spirit. But tonight, it felt cloying, suffocating, much like the secrets that clung to these walls. He traced the spine of a leather-bound tome, its gold lettering dulled by time, the title obscured by a film of dust. The weight of his discovery pressed down on him, a physical ache in his chest. The experiments. Not merely cruel, but calculated. Designed not to break minds, but to forge them into something else entirely. Something… more.

He remembered the hushed tones of his great-aunt Eleanor, her eyes darting nervously towards the west wing whenever the asylum was mentioned. He’d dismissed it then as the ramblings of an old woman, but now, the words echoed with a chilling clarity. *“They sought to unlock what was already within,”* she’d whispered, her voice raspy like dry leaves. *“To sharpen the senses, to bridge the veil. A dangerous inheritance, Alexander.”* Dangerous. He’d felt that danger, that inexplicable pull, ever since he’d first seen the monolithic structure from his window, a dark scar upon the otherwise manicured landscape of his inheritance.

He’d spent weeks poring over the scattered journals, piecing together fragments of notes, deciphering the cryptic shorthand of Dr. Alistair Finch, the asylum’s chief physician and, Alexander now knew with sickening certainty, his own ancestor. The entries spoke of ‘subjects,’ of ‘amplification,’ and ‘transference.’ They detailed the painstaking, often brutal, process of isolating and refining what Finch termed ‘the Moon Spark’ – a latent psychic energy, he believed, inherent in their bloodline.
