The air within the hidden chamber was thick, stagnant, carrying the faint, metallic tang of old blood and something else, something acrid and chemical that pricked at Alexander’s nostrils. Dust motes danced in the solitary beam of his flashlight, illuminating rows upon rows of metal filing cabinets, their surfaces scarred and dulled with age. It was here, behind the false wall, behind the carefully concealed mechanism, that the true heart of the asylum’s secrets lay entombed. He had expected horrors, certainly. The whispers, the chilling atmosphere of the place, the very air of decay had promised that much. But this… this was a meticulous catalog of suffering, a clinical documentation of the unthinkable.
