Chapter 8
The Community Awakens
News of the maltreatment and Elder obi efforts begin to spread. Some in the community start to notice, their awareness growing, leading to hesitant questions and initial steps towards collective action.
The air in Oraifite, usually buzzing with the cheerful clamor of children playing and the gentle hum of daily life, had begun to carry a different kind of whisper. It started subtly, like a breeze rustling through dry leaves, then grew into a murmur, a ripple spreading from one compound to the next. Elder Obi, with his keen eyes and a heart that felt the pulse of the community, had been the first to truly hear it. He’d seen the shadows that clung to Chika, the way her small shoulders hunched as if carrying an invisible weight, and he’d heard the hushed tales that sometimes slipped from the lips of other children, tales of unkindness that pricked at the edges of their innocence.
He’d spoken to me, of course, his voice a low rumble of concern. “Emefiona, my child,” he’d said, his hand resting on my shoulder, a familiar comfort, “there are tears that are not shed in the open. There are hurts that fester in silence.” He spoke of Chika’s stepmother, of the sharp words and colder looks that seemed to follow the girl like a persistent cloud. And as he spoke, he began to do more than just speak. He started to observe, to listen more intently when he passed Chika’s compound, to offer a kindly word to the girl whenever he saw her, a word that seemed to bloom like a tiny flower in the barren landscape of her days.
News, like a determined vine, found its way through the cracks. It wasn't a sudden explosion, but a slow unfolding. At the market, where women gathered to exchange gossip and goods, fragments of conversation began to surface. “Did you see Chika yesterday? She looked so thin, so… lost.” Or, “Her stepmother is always so harsh. I saw her scold the poor child for nothing.” These were tentative observations, couched in the language of concern, tinged with the fear of overstepping.
