Chapter 7
Confronting the Darkness
Elder obi decides to gently confront Chika's stepmother, not with anger, but with a plea for understanding and empathy. This brave act highlights her courage and her belief in the possibility of change.
The sun beat down on Oraifite, but inside the compound, a different kind of heat simmered. It wasn't the warmth of a hearth, but the cold, sharp edge of fear that clung to Chika. I watched her from my usual spot under the mango tree, her small frame hunched as she scrubbed the courtyard stones, her movements jerky and uncertain. Her stepmother, a woman whose face seemed permanently etched with a frown, stood nearby, her arms crossed, her eyes like chips of obsidian. Every so often, a sharp word, a barked command, would slice through the air, and Chika would flinch, her scrubbing becoming even more frantic.
My heart ached for her. It was one thing to see such things on the internet, to hear whispers in the market, but it was another to witness it up close, to feel the chill of it seeping into your own spirit. Elder Obi, his face a roadmap of gentle wisdom, had seen it too. He’d been sitting on his own worn stool nearby, ostensibly mending a fishing net, but his eyes, I knew, missed nothing. He’d seen the way Chika’s stepmother’s hand had lingered a moment too long on Chika’s shoulder yesterday, a grip that spoke of possession rather than affection. He’d seen the way Chika’s eyes, usually so bright, had dulled like pebbles washed ashore.
Today, something shifted. Elder Obi, with a sigh that seemed to carry the weight of many years, slowly rose to his feet. The fishing net lay forgotten on his lap. He walked, not with haste, but with a deliberate, unhurried grace, towards Chika and her stepmother. My breath caught in my throat. I knew Elder Obi. He was a man who spoke with kindness, but also with a quiet authority that commanded respect. He wasn’t one for shouting or accusations. He was more like a gentle river, carving its path through stone with persistent, unwavering flow.
