The grand hall of Blackwood Manor had always felt like a stage, its polished floors reflecting the muted light that filtered through the tall, arched windows, and I, Callie, had always felt like a player. For weeks, I’d perfected my role: the sweet, slightly clumsy assistant, eager to please, a little too trusting, a perfect foil to Julian’s sharp, precise intellect.
