The Looking Glass Shatters
(Callie POV) The final trap is set. Callie lures Julian out to the woods—the exact spot she claimed he was staring at during the storm. In reality, she is the one who buried the evidence there.
The air in the woods was thick with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves, a perfume that always made me feel both grounded and a little bit haunted. Today, though, it felt different. Today, it felt like a stage, meticulously set for a final act. Julian walked beside me, his usual polished veneer a little frayed around the edges, a subtle tremor in his hands that I’d learned to recognize as a sign of his unraveling control. I’d chosen this spot carefully, a small clearing nestled deep within the ancient oaks, the same place I’d “noticed” him staring at with such intensity during that violent storm weeks ago. He’d been so convinced I was seeing something he’d been trying to hide, something that connected him to the wildness of the woods, to the untamed chaos he so desperately sought to suppress.
“This is the place, isn’t it, Julian?” I asked, my voice soft, a gentle breeze rustling the leaves around us. “The place you were looking at. You seemed so… troubled. Like you were seeing ghosts.”
He stopped, his gaze sweeping across the clearing, his eyes narrowed, searching. “Troubled? No, Callie. Merely… observing. The patterns of the wind, the way the trees bend. Nature’s own meticulous order.”
