The heavy oak door of Blackwood Manor groaned open, a sound that usually sent a shiver down my spine, but today, it was a harbinger of something far more significant. The crisp autumn air, usually a welcome respite from the manor’s oppressive stillness, felt charged with an almost electric anticipation. Julian had been expecting this visitor for weeks, a Mr. Abernathy, a legal representative from some distant branch of his family, tasked with… well, Julian had been vague. It was another piece of his meticulously curated puzzle, a detail he permitted me to know but not to fully comprehend.

I smoothed down the skirt of my simple grey dress, the one Julian had approved, the one that screamed “demure assistant, utterly harmless.” My heart, however, was a frantic hummingbird trapped in my chest. This was it. The moment I’d been preparing for, the delicate dance between my carefully constructed facade and the chilling reality of Julian’s control.

Julian stood by the grand fireplace, a silhouette against the flickering flames. He was a study in poised authority, his posture impeccable, his gaze sharp and assessing as he watched the front gates. He hadn't bothered to instruct me on how to behave, not directly. Instead, he’d subtly shifted the atmosphere over the past few days, his silences more pointed, his brief glances carrying the weight of unspoken expectations. He wanted me to be nervous, to be uncertain, to be the epitome of an intimidated employee. And I would be. Oh, I would be.
