I was wrong.

He introduced himself as Mr. Sterling, an estate executor, and with him, a woman whose name was an elegant cascade of syllables, Ms. Albright, a capital firm attorney. Their arrival was not a matter of routine, but of consequence.

Julian, of course, was ready. He always was. He met them at the grand oak door, his smile a practiced, effortless thing, the kind that could charm the birds from the trees and lull even the most suspicious into a false sense of security. He ushered them into the study, the room that had become the heart of his meticulously curated world, and I was there, as always, a silent shadow in the periphery.
