Chapter 14

The Archivist's Revenge

(Callie POV): Callie spots the trap with the leaked security codes. Instead of using them to steal documents, she leaves the codes completely untouched but subtly alters Julian’s daily schedule log, proving to him without a word that she is too smart to fall for amateur bait. The mutual realization that they are actively reading each other's minds heightens the thrill.

The air in Julian’s study, usually so crisp and sterile, felt thick with unspoken things. I’d spent the morning cataloging the latest batch of old ledgers, the scent of aging paper and ink a familiar comfort. Julian had been particularly pleased with my meticulousness, his rare smile a fleeting, almost predatory thing. He’d even remarked on my “dedication,” a word that always made my skin prickle. He liked dedication. He liked things that were unwavering, predictable. And I, Callie, the sweet, slightly clumsy assistant, was nothing if not dedicated.

This morning, however, a different kind of dedication was required. As I’d been carefully arranging the ledgers, a small, folded piece of paper had fluttered from between their brittle pages. It was a security code, neatly typed, a series of numbers and letters that looked remarkably like the access codes Julian used for his private digital archives. My heart had given a little lurch, a tiny bird trapped in my chest. A trap. It was too obvious, too conveniently placed. Julian was brilliant, yes, but his brilliance was often a cold, sharp thing, prone to overconfidence. He expected me to be naive, to be eager, to be foolish.

I picked up the paper, my fingers brushing against its smooth surface. It felt innocent enough, a simple piece of information. But I knew better. This wasn’t a gift; it was a test. A test to see if I would betray his trust, if I would try to sneak into his precious digital vault, if I would chase the bait he so carelessly dangled. And if I did, he would know. He would know exactly how I’d obtained the code, and then he would know that I wasn't the simple girl he thought I was. He would know I was capable of deception.
