The air in Eleanor Vance’s small, meticulously tidy apartment still held the faint, lingering scent of lavender and old paper, a quiet testament to a life lived in the service of order. Outside, the city hummed with a restless energy, a stark contrast to the hushed stillness that had descended upon the Vance household since Senator Sterling’s funeral. Sarah Jenkins sat on the edge of a plush armchair, her notebook open but her pen still, her gaze fixed on Eleanor. The former Chief of Staff’s hands, usually so steady, were clasped tightly in her lap, her knuckles white.
“I… I can’t do this alone, Sarah,” Eleanor began, her voice barely a whisper, thick with an emotion Sarah couldn’t quite place – fear, regret, a profound exhaustion. “Arthur… he’s everywhere. He has eyes and ears in every corner. If he even suspects I’m talking to you…” She trailed off, a shiver running through her.
Sarah leaned forward, her own anxieties momentarily forgotten. She saw not a potential witness, but a woman drowning in a sea of her own making, a victim of the very system she had once served with such unwavering dedication. “Eleanor, I understand. But Senator Sterling… he believed in the truth. He wouldn’t have wanted his legacy to be built on lies, would he?”
