The hushed reverence of the cathedral still clung to Sarah like the scent of lilies and old stone. Days had passed since Senator Sterling’s final rites, yet the air in the capital felt heavy, thick with unspoken words and the lingering echo of a nation’s sorrow. Sarah, perched at her cramped desk in the newsroom, the glow of her monitor casting a pale light on her determined face, found herself returning again and again to the fragmented memories of that solemn day. The meticulously crafted eulogies, the stoic faces of the powerful, and then, a flicker of something discordant: a hushed conversation near the shadowed alcove by the organ, a hurried exchange of glances that spoke of unease, not grief.

It had been a whisper, almost lost in the vastness of the nave, but it had snagged Sarah’s attention like a loose thread. The speakers, two men in dark suits, their faces obscured by the gloom, had spoken in clipped, urgent tones. She couldn’t catch the words, not clearly, but the palpable tension, the way one man had clutched the other’s arm, had etched itself into her mind. Let’s focus on the legacy, not on phantom conspiracies.” But Sarah couldn’t let it go. She’d started with small, quiet inquiries, poring over Sterling’s recent speeches, his voting records, searching for any hint of a looming crisis, any sign of a threat he might have been facing.
