Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating stacks of scrolls that threatened to spill from their shelves. Elder Bai, his face a roadmap of gentle wrinkles, sat hunched over a worn jade tablet, tracing patterns with a gnarled finger. Li Xian watched him, the weight of his discoveries pressing down. “You’ve been quiet, young Li,” Elder Bai murmured, his voice raspy like turning leaves. He didn’t look up, but Li Xian felt the weight of his gaze, a familiar, knowing pressure. “The silence of a mind wrestling with impossible truths is a heavy thing.”

Li Xian finally spoke, his voice low. “Impossible, Elder, or simply forgotten? My father spent years chasing shadows, and now… now the shadows have found their teeth.” He gestured vaguely, encompassing the scrolls, the room, the very air that seemed to hum with ancient secrets. “This wound… it’s not the mark of a beast. It’s a signature. A deliberate, precise violation of life. The same signature that took my father.”
