Chapter 8
The Unveiled Truth
Elara overhears Lois confessing to Maya: she's moving away. The hug was a goodbye to the friend Lois felt she could be most honest with, a truth she feared would shatter Elara.
Elara’s feet dragged, each step a reluctant protest against the inevitable march of time. The school corridors, usually a vibrant tapestry of laughter and hurried goodbyes, now felt like a hushed prelude to an ending she didn’t want to face. The sting of Lois’s hug to Maya, a gesture so out of character it had felt like a physical blow, still throbbed beneath her ribs. It was the last day, the grand finale of their primary school years, and Elara felt adrift, an island in a sea of shared memories.
She’d spent the morning in a fog, her usual bubbly enthusiasm dampened by a persistent ache of confusion. Every time she’d tried to engage Lois, a polite but firm barrier seemed to rise. Lois, who normally radiated a quiet warmth, had become a cool, distant star, her eyes flitting away, her smiles just a fraction too quick, too brittle. And then, the hug. The lingering embrace between Lois and Maya, witnessed from a few feet away, a scene Elara couldn't unsee, couldn't unfeel. It had felt like a betrayal, a stark declaration that Maya was the one Lois chose to share her final moments with, not Elara.
“Are you okay, Elara?” Maya’s voice, soft and concerned, cut through Elara’s reverie. Maya stood beside her, her expression etched with a familiar kindness that usually soothed Elara’s frayed nerves. Today, however, it only amplified her distress. How could Maya be okay? Hadn’t she seen Lois’s gaze, the unspoken intimacy in that hug?
