The late afternoon sun, usually a warm, comforting presence, felt weak and watery as Elara lingered near the hushed classrooms. The usual boisterous energy of the school day had long since dissipated, leaving behind a hollow echo that mirrored the ache in Elara’s chest. She clutched her worn school bag, its weight a familiar anchor, but today it did little to steady her. Every instinct screamed at her to run, to escape the suffocating silence, but a stubborn, desperate need for answers held her captive. Lois’s hug, so unexpected, so *wrong*, had lodged itself in Elara’s heart like a shard of ice, and she couldn’t move past it.

She saw them then, a little way down the corridor, near the art room. Lois and Maya. Lois, her back to Elara, was speaking in low, earnest tones, her shoulders hunched as if against a wind only she could feel. Maya, ever the gentle listener, was nodding, her expression a mixture of concern and something else Elara couldn't quite decipher from this distance. A pang of jealousy, sharp and unwelcome, twisted in Elara’s gut. Maya. Of course, it was Maya. Lois had always been a creature of quiet depths, but Elara had thought she knew those depths, had believed their shared laughter and whispered secrets had carved out a space for her there. But that hug… that single, definitive act of affection directed at Maya, had shattered that illusion.

Elara swallowed, her throat suddenly dry. She should leave. She should pretend she hadn’t seen them, that this gnawing confusion wasn’t consuming her. But the words Lois had spoken to Maya, even muffled by the distance, seemed to carry a weight Elara couldn’t ignore. They were hushed, yes, but there was an intensity to Lois’s voice that Elara hadn’t heard in weeks. It was the voice of someone unburdening themselves, of someone confessing.
