The water had been rising for three days. It had swallowed the fields first. Then the old county road. Then the abandoned gas station at the edge of town. By the fourth night, the only road leading toward Moon Industrial Works had become a narrow strip of cracked asphalt surrounded by dark, churning water. Alexander Moon drove slowly through the storm. Rain hammered the roof of his car so hard that it sounded like thousands of fingers tapping against the metal. The windshield wipers moved back and forth. Back and forth. Back and forth. They were barely winning their battle against the rain. Alexander leaned closer to the windshield. The headlights illuminated only a few feet ahead. Beyond that was darkness. He could barely see the road. He should have turned around. Every sensible part of him told him to turn around. But Alexander had spent the last three months searching for answers, and every answer had led him to the same place. The factory. Moon Industrial Works. A place his family refused to discuss.

He navigated the treacherous road with a white-knuckled grip on the steering wheel, the tires occasionally hydroplaning with a sickening lurch. The water lapped at the car doors, a constant, menacing presence. He imagined it seeping into the engine, into the very soul of the machine, just as the mystery of this place had seeped into his own. He saw the silhouette of the factory emerge from the gloom, a hulking, skeletal shape against the bruised sky. It was a monolith of rusted steel and darkened glass, a monument to his family’s silence. No lights shone from its windows, no sign of life stirred within its vast, imposing frame. It looked abandoned, forgotten, a ghost ship adrift in a sea of rising water.

He parked the car as close as he dared to the main gate, the churning water already lapping at the tires. The wind howled, carrying with it the scent of ozone and something else, something metallic and sterile that seemed to cling to the air around the factory. He stepped out of the car, the rain instantly soaking him to the bone. The gate, a formidable structure of wrought iron, was unlocked. It swung inward with a mournful groan, as if protesting his intrusion. He walked through the deserted grounds, the gravel crunching under his boots, the sound unnervingly loud in the otherwise deafening roar of the storm. The main entrance was a cavernous space, its doors slightly ajar. He pushed them open, the hinges screaming in protest.
