Buster, with his tail tucked between his legs and his ears drooping, nudged Leo’s hand with his wet nose. The little boy, curled into a tight ball of misery beneath the sprawling branches of an ancient oak tree, barely stirred. The park, which had moments ago seemed like a vibrant playground full of exciting adventures, now felt vast and indifferent, its laughter and games a distant echo. Tears, hot and insistent, tracked through the dirt on Leo’s cheeks. He’d followed Buster, chasing after a particularly elusive butterfly, his dad’s booming laugh and Mom’s gentle hum still echoing in his ears, a soundtrack to his happy day. But then the butterfly had fluttered away, Buster had veered off in pursuit of a fascinating scent, and Leo, suddenly alone, had realized he didn’t know which way was home.

Panic, cold and sharp, had begun to prickle at him. He’d called for Buster, his voice a small, trembling sound swallowed by the rustling leaves. He’d called for Mom, his voice growing hoarser with each desperate cry. The familiar paths now seemed to twist and turn into a confusing maze. Every rustle in the undergrowth sounded like a monster, every shadow seemed to stretch and writhe with unknown dangers. He hugged his knees tighter, burying his face in his arms, the soft fur of Buster’s back a small comfort against his cheek. Buster whined, a low, mournful sound, and licked Leo’s tear-streaked face.

Just as Leo’s despair threatened to consume him entirely, a new sound cut through the quiet gloom. It was a distant voice, calling his name. At first, Leo thought he was imagining it, another trick of his worried mind. But the voice grew louder, more distinct. It was Mom’s voice, but there was something else, a different timbre, a deeper, richer tone that he was starting to recognize. It was Mrs. Gable.
