The Case of the Captured Crown
Sheng explains she was trying to retrieve a stolen, magical crown for these creatures, a task she impulsively accepted. The thief, a mischievous sprite, is the reason for her 'separation'.
The air in the Whispering Woods had lost its usual, comforting hum. Lin and Feng, their faces a thundercloud of worry and burgeoning rage, pushed aside a curtain of shimmering, dew-kissed leaves. They’d followed the faintest trail of glitter – Sheng’s signature sparkle – for what felt like an eternity. An eternity punctuated by Lin’s huffing and Feng’s pointed sighs, each one a tiny explosion of unspoken frustration.
“Are you *sure* this is the way, Feng?” Lin grumbled, swatting a particularly persistent glow-worm that seemed to be mocking her with its cheerful luminescence. “It feels like we’ve been wandering in circles. And my hair is getting *damp*.”
Feng, ever the more level-headed of the two (though that was a very low bar when Sheng was involved), smoothed a stray curl from her forehead. “The glitter trail led here, Lin. And the last whisper we heard was about a ‘sparkling thief’ and a ‘borrowed bauble’.” She paused, a thoughtful frown creasing her brow. “Though, honestly, who steals a bauble in the middle of the Whispering Woods? It’s not exactly the royal treasury.”
