Chapter 5
A Glimpse of Vulnerability
During a tense badminton match, Rein witnesses a rare moment of unguarded emotion from Valerie. It's a fleeting glimpse behind the CEO's icy facade, sparking a flicker of curiosity in Rein.
The polished wooden floor of the court gleamed under the bright lights, each stride I took echoing with a rhythm that was both familiar and exhilarating. The shuttlecock, a tiny blur of white against the vibrant backdrop, became my entire world. Every swing, every jump, every calculated dive was a testament to the hours I’d poured into this sanctuary, a place where the sharp edges of my architectural dreams had long since softened into the satisfying thud of a well-placed shot. Months had passed since I’d last sketched a building, since the sting of Valerie’s critiques had driven me away from the drafting table and onto the court. Badminton had become my solace, my escape, and my quiet rebellion.
Today, however, was different. Today, the usual hum of focused energy in the private club was tinged with a nervous anticipation. Valerie Suppasorn was here. Not just observing from her usual detached perch in the VIP lounge, but on the court herself. She’d arrived with her usual entourage, a silent wave of power preceding her, but then, she’d surprised everyone by accepting an invitation to a doubles match. My heart did a strange little flip-flop. We hadn’t spoken more than a curt nod since that disastrous final review of my designs. The memory still pricked at me – the way her eyes had scanned my meticulously crafted blueprints, her lips pressed into a thin line, and then, the devastating pronouncement that they lacked “vision.” Vision. As if I hadn’t poured my soul into every line.
The pairing was unexpected. Valerie, partnered with a seasoned, albeit slightly older, player, was across the net from me and my usual doubles partner, Kai. Kai, bless his enthusiastic heart, was practically vibrating with excitement. He’d always admired Valerie from afar, a distant, almost mythical figure. I, on the other hand, felt a knot of apprehension tightening in my stomach. This was not the controlled environment of the design studio; this was a space where raw talent and instinct took center stage, and I wasn’t sure I wanted to be under Valerie’s scrutiny in this arena.
