Chapter 4
The Badminton Court
Months pass. Rein excels in badminton tournaments. A chance encounter at a prestigious event brings her face-to-face with Valerie, who seems intrigued by Rein's fierce competitive spirit.
The scent of polished wood and the rhythmic squeak of sneakers had become my sanctuary. Months had bled into one another, each marked not by blueprints and structural integrity, but by the satisfying thwack of a shuttlecock meeting my racket. The sharp, decisive sound was a balm to the ache that had settled in my chest after Valerie’s dismissal of my designs. My architectural dreams, once so vibrant, had been relegated to the dusty corners of my mind, replaced by the electrifying pulse of competition.
I was good. More than good, actually. The fierce focus that had once been directed at understanding load-bearing walls and aesthetic flow now channeled into lightning-fast reflexes and pinpoint accuracy on the badminton court. My family, initially concerned by my abrupt career shift, had come to embrace it. My brothers, Aries and Peter, often cheered from the sidelines, their roars of encouragement a welcome counterpoint to the hushed disappointment I’d felt from my former boss. Even Sam, usually lost in his own world, would offer a rare, genuine smile when I brought home a trophy. My cousins, Jio and Emman, were my constant companions, their easy banter a much-needed distraction from the lingering sting of rejection.
Today was no different. The National Badminton Championship was in full swing, the air thick with anticipation and the metallic tang of sweat. I was in the zone, my body moving with a grace and precision that felt almost instinctive. Every jump, every smash, every defensive lunge was executed with a power born from months of dedication. The crowd was a blur of color and sound, their cheers washing over me as I secured another point. I was on fire, a stark contrast to the quiet ember that had been my ambition just a few months prior.
