The victory at Oakhaven had been hard-won, a testament to their courage and Kaelen’s strategic brilliance, but it had come at a cost far greater than blood. The betrayal, a venomous serpent that had struck from within their own ranks, had left wounds that festered, poisoning the fragile trust they had painstakingly built.

Beside her, Queen Lyra’s presence was a silent, steady anchor, but even her seasoned composure couldn’t entirely mask the weariness etched around her eyes. She’d seen this before, the insidious way doubt could unravel even the most determined of alliances. Kaelen, ever vigilant, stood near the entrance, his jaw tight, his eyes scanning the perimeter as if expecting another unseen attack. His loyalty was unwavering, a shield forged in the fires of his own past, but Elara knew he felt the ripple of discord as keenly as she did.

“We need to discuss the patrols,” Elara began, her voice softer than she intended, the reporter’s instinct to smooth over rough edges warring with the nascent queen’s need for directness. “Since the incident at the west gate, morale has been… low.”
