The late afternoon sun, a soft buttery glow, slanted through the living room window, catching dust motes dancing in the quiet air. Samantha sat opposite her father, Arthur, on the worn floral sofa. The room itself felt like a repository of memory, the scent of old paper and lemon polish a comforting balm. Arthur, his silver hair a wispy halo around his kind face, held a faded photograph, his gaze distant. He’d been quiet for a while, lost in the labyrinth of his own recollections, a place Samantha had learned to navigate with patience.
“Dad?” she prompted gently, her voice barely disturbing the stillness.
He blinked, the photograph coming back into focus. “Oh, yes, dear. Just… looking at this. It was the summer fête, wasn’t it? The one by the old oak tree.” He traced a finger over a younger version of himself, a shy smile playing on his lips.
