Eleanor's Hesitation
Confronted with the evidence, Eleanor Vance becomes increasingly agitated. She attempts to steer Samantha away from the truth, her protective instincts clashing with Samantha's need for understanding.
The old armchair creaked as Eleanor Vance shifted her weight, a sound that echoed the unease settling in the room. Sunlight, usually a cheerful visitor in her sunroom, seemed to cast long, uncertain shadows across the polished wooden floor. Samantha sat opposite her, a quiet intensity in her gaze, the worn pages of the King Family Chronicle spread between them like an open wound. The name, Arthur Vance, repeated itself, a refrain that had sent a ripple of disquiet through Samantha, and now, through her grandmother.
“Grandma,” Samantha began, her voice soft, hesitant. “This name… Arthur Vance. It’s in here, multiple times. And it’s linked to… well, to the Fords, isn’t it?” She gestured vaguely at the page, her finger tracing a line of faded ink. The words felt heavy, imbued with a significance she couldn’t quite grasp, but felt with a certainty that settled deep in her bones.
Eleanor’s hands, usually steady as they tended her beloved roses, fluttered. She picked up a delicate porcelain teacup, her knuckles white against the delicate china. “Oh, that Arthur,” she murmured, her gaze fixed on the swirling patterns in the tea. “A distant relative, you know. From a long time ago.” Her tone was dismissive, a hurried brushstroke across a canvas that demanded more detail.
