The sun beat down with an indifferent intensity, each ray a hammer blow against the ochre sand. Ryy squinted, her gaze fixed on the horizon where the dunes shimmered like water, a mirage of cool, life-giving water that always seemed just beyond reach. The whispers, usually a gentle murmur against the vast silence, were a chorus of lament now, a mournful sigh that seemed to emanate from the very earth beneath her worn sandals. They spoke of a time long ago, of promises made and broken, of a sorrow that had seeped into the very marrow of the desert.

She had been walking for days, guided by the fragmented tales the wind carried, tales that spoke of places where the sand remembered. Elder Maeve’s words echoed in her mind, a steadying presence amidst the rising tide of unease. “The desert holds its memories in stone, child,” the elder had said, her eyes, usually alight with gentle wisdom, shadowed with a deep, ancestral worry. “Seek the places where the stones have stood the longest. There, the whispers will sing their truest song.”

We need water, not riddles!” His practicality, once a comfort, now felt like a heavy chain, tethering her to a reality that was rapidly dissolving. She understood his fear, the raw, exposed vulnerability beneath his gruff exterior. He saw the desert as a vast, empty canvas of danger, not the living, breathing entity that whispered its secrets to her.
