The whispers had grown from a murmur to a desperate plea, a chorus of dry, sibilant voices that clawed at Ryy’s senses. Each gust of wind, once a gentle caress, now carried the lament of dying roots and thirsting earth. The vibrant green of the oasis, the lifeblood of her village, had faded to a sickly yellow-brown, the date palms drooping like weary sentinels, their fronds brittle and lifeless. Fear, as palpable as the heat radiating from the sand, had settled over their homes, a heavy blanket smothering hope. Ryy felt it in her bones, in the tightening knot of her stomach, in the frantic beat of her own heart.

Elder Maeve’s words echoed in her mind, a comforting balm against the rising tide of panic. “The desert speaks, child. And you are its ear.” But what did it speak of now? Not of the gentle secrets of hidden springs or the migration routes of the sand gazelles, but of a profound sickness, a deep wound festering beneath the sun-baked surface. The whispers were fragmented, broken like shattered pottery, each shard a glimpse of something terrible. *…broken… forgotten… thirst… death…*

Kael stood beside her, his brow furrowed, his gaze fixed on the wilting fronds of a nearby palm. His hand rested on the hilt of his knife, a gesture of readiness that Ryy knew was born of his constant, restless worry. “They’re worse today, aren’t they?” he said, his voice low, a rumble of concern. “The whispers. You look pale, Ryy.”
