The wind, a mournful ballad sung through skeletal trees, carried the scent of damp earth and the promise of solitude. I walked, each step a deliberate act of severing ties with the world I had known, the world that had known me only as a shadow to be vanquished. The cobblestone paths of bustling cities, the clamor of taverns, the judging eyes of those who saw only the ‘villain’ etched into my very being – all receded like a tide pulling away from a desolate shore. Lord: Kaelen.* The words, stark and functional, offered no judgment, no fanfare, only a cold confirmation of my new, self-appointed title.
