The chill that clung to my bones was not of the biting wind, nor the damp earth beneath my bare feet. It was a deeper cold, a marrow-deep frost that had settled upon my spirit long before this world’s icy embrace. They had summoned me, not with trumpets and fanfare, but with a desperate whisper, a plea that had rippled through the ether, snagging me from the precipice of oblivion. I had expected a blade, a shield, perhaps the roaring fury of a summoned beast. Instead, the light that bathed me was the muted glow of arcane energies, and the hands that guided mine were spectral, impossibly gentle.
A voice, like the rustle of ancient parchment, echoed in the hollows of my being. *“Not the path of steel, child. Not the roar of conquest. A different weave, a subtler art. The crucible awaits.”*
Crucible. The word settled upon me, heavy with unfamiliar weight. My hands, once accustomed to the phantom grip of a controller, now trembled as they were guided over vials of shimmering dust, over dried herbs that smelled of forgotten forests and the deep, dark earth. The air, thick with the scent of ozone and something akin to burnt sugar, pulsed with a latent power. This was not the arena of the players, the cacophony of their triumphant shouts and despairing cries. This was a sanctuary, albeit a spectral one.
