Pablo's Parents' Worry

The morning sun, usually a cheerful visitor, slanted through Pablo’s bedroom window in accusing golden bars. His mother, balancing a breakfast tray laden with his favorite blueberry pancakes, paused on the threshold, a sudden chill prickling her skin. The bed was a rumpled landscape, the pillow still holding the faint, cool imprint of a sleeping head, but Pablo was gone.

“Pablo?” Her voice, at first a gentle question, sharpened into a tremor as she set the tray down. The pancakes, once a beacon of morning delight, now seemed to mock her. She peered into the closet, a dark maw of forgotten toys, then the small bathroom, and finally, with a growing dread, crouched to peer beneath the bed. Nothing. Her calls grew louder, echoing through the quiet house, a desperate summons that finally brought his father, the morning newspaper still clutched in his hand like a shield.

Together, their search grew frantic, room by room. The back door, usually latched tight, stood ajar, a sliver of pale light spilling onto the porch. Dewdrops glistened on the worn wooden steps, and there, stark against the damp wood, were muddy footprints. Small sneaker prints, undeniably Pablo’s, leading away from the house, towards the dark, whispering edge of the forest. Beside them, pressed deep into the soft earth, were impressions far larger, hoofprints that spoke of a powerful, unseen presence.
