The hum of the transport was a low, guttural growl beneath me, a constant thrumming that vibrated through the worn soles of my boots. Outside, the city blurred into streaks of neon and concrete, a familiar tapestry of escape routes and dead ends. Each mile that unspooled felt like a fragile thread, stretched taut between my past and an uncertain future. He’d offered sanctuary, a network of safe houses, a chance to fight back. But even within their clandestine ranks, I felt a constant unease. The line between protector and predator was perilously thin in this world, and I’d seen enough to know that trust was a luxury few could afford.
