Escape from the City
With Thorne closing in and internal trust fractured, Elara and Liam must flee the city. Their journey is fraught with peril, testing their bond and Elara's resourcefulness.
The rain was a relentless drumbeat against the grimy windowpane, each drop a tiny hammer against my fraying nerves. Outside, the city was a labyrinth of slick asphalt and neon bleed, a place I’d come to know as both sanctuary and cage. It was a familiar dance, this constant looking over my shoulder, this perpetual hum of anxiety beneath my skin. But lately, the rhythm had shifted, the tempo quickened, and the shadows felt deeper, more predatory. Thorne. The name was a cold knot in my gut, a whisper of the relentless pursuit that had defined my existence for too long.
Liam was asleep beside me, his breathing a soft, steady counterpoint to the storm’s fury. He was an anchor, a sliver of the ordinary in my chaotic universe, and the thought of him being pulled into this maelstrom sent a fresh wave of dread through me. He knew nothing, not really. He saw the girl who sometimes flinched at loud noises, the one whose eyes held a perpetual wariness, but he didn’t see the veins that pulsed with an unnatural light beneath my skin when I was stressed, didn’t see the impossible things I could pull from the ether. He didn’t see the hunted. And he absolutely couldn’t know the danger he was in simply by being near me.
A floorboard creaked downstairs. My head snapped up, every muscle tensing. It wasn't the house settling. It was too deliberate, too… stealthy. Liam stirred, a sleepy mumble escaping his lips. "Elara? What is it?"
