The air in Liam’s apartment was thick with a silence that felt heavier than any of the carefully constructed conversations we’d had over the past few months. Outside, the city hummed its usual indifferent tune, but inside, it was just us, the remnants of spilled wine on the rug, and the ghost of a lie that felt increasingly fragile. Aunt Carol’s thinly veiled accusations, delivered with that saccharine smile that always made my teeth ache, had landed like tiny, poisoned darts. “Are you *sure* you’re happy, Eleanor? Truly happy? Because sometimes, dear, the happiest smiles hide the deepest sorrows.” Her words echoed in the quiet, a relentless drumbeat against the carefully constructed walls I’d built around my heart.

Liam, usually so effortlessly at ease, was pacing the length of the living room, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. He’d been quiet since we’d left my parents’ dinner party, a stark contrast to his usual animated self. I watched him, a knot of anxiety tightening in my chest. This was it, I thought. The moment the whole house of cards would tumble down. I’d known it was a possibility, of course. Every lingering touch, every stolen glance, every moment where the lines between performance and reality blurred had felt like a step closer to this precipice.

He stopped by the window, staring out at the twinkling lights that seemed so far away, so unconcerned with our predicament. “She knows, doesn’t she?” he finally said, his voice low, devoid of its usual charm. It wasn’t a question, not really. It was a statement of fact, a resignation.
