The air in the grand ballroom of the Sterling estate felt thick, heavy with the scent of expensive perfume and the clinking of champagne flutes. It was Liam’s family’s annual charity gala, an event I’d been dreading with a ferocity that surprised even me. Usually, my cynicism acted as a shield, deflecting the well-intentioned but ultimately suffocating inquiries about my love life. But tonight, with Liam’s arm a steady weight around my waist, my shield felt flimsy, porous.
Everywhere I looked, there were eyes. Eyes that scanned, eyes that judged, eyes that, I suspected, saw right through our carefully constructed facade. Aunt Carol, a hawk in a sequined dress, was perched at a small table near the entrance, her gaze unwavering. She’d cornered me earlier, her voice a low hiss that cut through the ambient chatter.
“Eleanor, dear,” she’d begun, her smile too wide, too knowing. “Liam seems… very attentive. Are you sure he’s the one? He’s a bit younger than you, isn’t he? And his family, well, they’re rather *prominent*. One must be careful.”
