Cracks in the Facade

The charity gala was a swirling vortex of silk, sequins, and the suffocating scent of lilies. Liam, bless his adaptable soul, was a natural. He navigated the room with the effortless grace of a seasoned socialite, his arm a warm, steady anchor around my waist. I, on the other hand, felt like a tightly wound spring, every polite smile a Herculean effort, every murmured compliment a whispered prayer that no one would notice the tremor in my voice.
Aunt Carol, of course, was a constant, hawk-like presence. She flitted from one conversation to another, her sharp eyes missing nothing, her perfectly coiffed head swiveling like a radar dish. I caught her watching us from across a cluster of champagne flutes, a faint, almost imperceptible frown creasing her brow. It was the look that said, "I'm still not entirely convinced." She’d cornered me earlier, ostensibly to admire my dress, but her real agenda was clear.
“Eleanor, darling,” she’d begun, her voice dripping with saccharine concern, “Liam seems… very attentive. Are you sure he’s the one? He’s quite a bit younger than you, isn’t he? And so sudden, this engagement.”
