The scent of lemon polish and old paper clung to the air in my grandmother’s sunroom, a familiar comfort that usually soothed my frayed nerves. Today, however, it felt like a gilded cage. Aunt Carol’s voice, a persistent hum of disapproval, vibrated through the antique lace doilies. She was, as always, dissecting my life with the precision of a surgeon and the tact of a runaway train.
“And you’re sure about this young man, Eleanor? Liam, is it? He seems… rather smooth. Almost too smooth.” She steepled her fingers, her gaze sharp enough to strip paint. “Are you certain he’s not just after your inheritance?”
I forced a smile, a practiced, brittle thing. “Aunt Carol, Liam is a successful architect. He doesn’t need my inheritance. He’s just… very taken with me.” I hated how that sounded, how vulnerable it made me feel. Liam, the architect, the man I’d roped into this charade less than a week ago, was currently across town, probably sketching out blueprints for a building that would stand for centuries, while I was here, defending my fabricated happiness to my own family.
