The last gear, a small, gleaming cog that Leo had polished until it shone like a tiny silver moon, finally clicked into place. He held his breath, his small hands steady on the chain. Grandpa Joe watched from his stool, a soft smile playing on his lips, his eyes twinkling with a knowing warmth. The shed, usually filled with the scent of oil and old wood, now held a different kind of magic, a hum of anticipation.

Leo had spent days, weeks even, with his grandfather. Days that had started with the reluctant scrape of rust, the stubborn refusal of a seized bolt, and the bewildering tangle of wires and gears. Now, that skeletal frame was no longer dull. Leo had scrubbed and scrubbed, his small arms aching, until the metal began to gleam beneath the grime. He’d learned to use sandpaper, to coax stubborn rust away with wire brushes, and to apply a thin, protective coat of oil that made the metal sing. He’d discovered the joy of a well-oiled chain, the satisfying click of brakes that actually worked, and the smooth spin of a wheel that no longer wobbled precariously.
