The afternoon sun, a warm honey spill, slanted through the grimy windowpanes of Grandpa Joe’s shed, illuminating dancing dust motes. Leo, his brow furrowed in concentration, wrestled with a bolt that had seized itself to the bicycle frame with the tenacity of a barnacle. It was the bolt that held the pedal crank in place, and it absolutely refused to budge. He’d tried his dad’s wrench, then Grandpa’s, even a bit of gentle persuasion with a rubber mallet, all to no avail. A sigh escaped his lips, a puff of frustration in the quiet, tool-scented air.

“It’s no good, Grandpa,” Leo mumbled, dropping the wrench with a clatter that made him wince. He could feel the familiar ache of disappointment creeping in, the same one that pricked him when he saw his friends whizzing past on their gleaming, factory-fresh bikes. His own creation, still in pieces, felt like a clumsy imitation, a dream that was stubbornly refusing to take shape.

Grandpa Joe, who had been methodically sorting through a box of assorted nuts and bolts nearby, ambled over. His hands, gnarled and strong, moved with a practiced grace that Leo always found mesmerizing. He peered at the recalcitrant bolt, a twinkle in his wise eyes.
