The dust motes danced in the slivers of sunlight that pierced the gloom of the attic, each one a tiny, glittering ghost in the stillness. It had been weeks since Mom’s things had been packed away, weeks since I’d felt strong enough to even look. But tonight, the weight of Alex’s secret, of his darkness, had pressed down on me, suffocating me. I needed something, anything, to anchor me, to remind me of the light that had once filled our lives.

My fingers traced the worn edges of old photo albums, the scent of aged paper and dried flowers clinging to the air. I found a small, wooden box tucked beneath a stack of faded quilts, its surface carved with delicate, swirling patterns. It was Mom’s jewelry box, but it felt heavier than it should. Inside, nestled amongst tarnished silver lockets and a string of pearls, was a single, cream-colored envelope. My name was written on it in Mom’s familiar, elegant script.

My heart gave a painful lurch. A letter. From Mom. Why hadn't I found this before? Carefully, my hands trembling, I unfolded the single sheet of paper. The ink was slightly faded, but her words were as clear and vibrant as if she’d spoken them yesterday.
